Spring storms hit 550 traffic accidents in most districts
The recent spring storm in the Greater Toronto Area has resulted in 550 traffic accidents, and power outages in some areas. Pearson International Airport cancelled more than 400 flights and some schools and universities suspended classes. The Ministry of Environment predicts that there will be ice storms on Sunday.
Kerry Schmidt, an Ontario provincial policeman, said that most traffic accidents are single-vehicle collisions, such as a vehicle falling into a ditch, hitting a concrete wall, or spinning on the road because of slippery terrain. Schmid called on the people to try not to drive if necessary. The City of Toronto sent nearly 80 sprinklers to help melt snow and ice on the road.
In terms of air traffic, Pearson Airport has arrived on more than 210 flights and cancelled more than 220 departure flights.
The Environment Ministry of Canada stated that there are snowfalls in both the north and west of Toronto, and it is forecast that “an ice storm is likely to occur” on Sunday. The Ministry of the Environment expects that severe weather will occur in many parts of the Greater Toronto Area and southern Ontario, and that “the situation changes every minute”. The multi-city emergency management center called on the people to keep an eye on the latest news, take care of neighbors, and stay away from trees that may fall.
Toronto Hydro spokeswoman Tori Gass said that he had prepared for a power outage, but said that due to the bad weather caused by falling rain, workers may have difficulty reaching the site, resulting in longer repair times. As of Saturday night, it is estimated that more than 6,000 households have lost their electricity.
On the school front, York University, Humber College, University of Guelph-Humber, and Ryerson University all announced that they held on Saturdays. Examinations will be rescheduled
