Megan Schroeder, a teacher in Toronto, said she almost put her luggage in the back box of a taxi and a policeman stopped her…
“This is an illegal taxi. They will steal your stuff,” she remembered as she said to her. Schroeder thought it was a legal taxi.
The issue of unlicensed taxis at GTA Airport has been around for a long time.
How to look for legal rental
The Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) stated that because the safety of passengers is the airport’s most important thing, they will increase the public education by hiring private guards to allow passengers to avoid taking unlicensed taxis.
According to GTAA’s official website, the legal taxis at the airport must meet the following conditions:
1. Only to solicit from designated locations
2. There will be a GTAA number plate on the bumper and a sticker on the window
3. There will be a uniform fee description in the car
4. Will not solicit at the end of the flight or in the parking lot
Peel District police spokesman Bally Saini said that this situation will happen every day. There are the following problems with unlicensed taxis. First, if an accident occurs, the driver may not cover the passenger’s insurance. Second, motorists may steal passengers’ luggage. So taking a taxi without a license is very dangerous.
GTAA hired private guards to try to eliminate the illegal taxis at Pearson Airport. The police also accompanied them to issue warning notices.
Schroeder said that if it wasn’t for the police, she didn’t know what to expect.
She said that although the experience of being cheated was very good, she still wanted to tell her story and prevent more people from being deceived.
