Planning and Heritage Department Receives Award

The City of Charlottetown Planning and Heritage Department received a Heritage Activity Award on Tuesday, February 20 from the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation for the historic exhibit series, Picturing A City.

The PEI Museum’s Heritage Awards are presented each year to individuals or groups in recognition of writing, architectural preservation, genealogy and general heritage activities.

“I want to extend my congratulations to the Planning and Heritage Department for their creativity in the development of these interactive window displays,” said Mayor Clifford Lee. “These displays have engaged the community and encouraged people of all ages to connect with the past and appreciate the rich heritage within the city,”

The award citation “Drawing on the City’s, the public and other repositories’ photographic, artifact, and archival collections, ‘Picturing a City’, has increased awareness and interest in the Charlottetown’s past through eye-catching and informative displays. The series has included themes such as ‘Back to School’, ‘Summertime’, ‘Christmas’, ‘The Railroad’, ‘Remembrance Day’ and others. These exhibits enhance awareness of Charlottetown’s history and increase our understanding and appreciation of the past. Following the window display, the exhibits are maintained online as a lasting resource for researchers and students. For presenting and documenting Charlottetown’s history through ‘Picturing a City’, we are pleased to present a Heritage Activity Award to the City of Charlottetown.”

“These displays would not be possible without the dedication and vision from our Heritage Researcher, Natalie Munn and Heritage Officer, Todd Saunders,” said Councillor Greg Rivard, chair of the Planning and Heritage Committee. “Their work to further develop the city’s collection of historical artifacts and photographs is crucial in preserving and celebrating our history.”

The Picturing a City historic exhibit series can be viewed in the storefront windows of the Planning and Heritage Department at 233 Queen Street. The current exhibit is Heat Lights and the Devil Wagon: A History of Energy and Innovation in Charlottetown and features historic photographs from the Collection and artifacts from the public and the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation collection. The exhibit will run until March 26 after which it will be posted online at https://charlottetownstories.wordpress.com/.
