More than 10 Halifax businesses targeted in new Nova Scotia Power phone scam

Nova Scotia Power (NSP) is warning its customers of a new phone scam after multiple businesses were targeted.

According to a release on 11 April, in this scam the caller poses as a company representative and demands a cash payment at a certain location — and threatens disconnection the same day if it’s not made.

NSP says they have received 11 reports from Halifax-area businesses concerning the scam.

The company said that they don’t require in-person bill payments, and they would never call a customer unexpectedly and issue an ultimatum like this on first contact.

“We always encourage customers to reach out to us and contact our Customer Care Centre if they receive an unexpected communication from us requesting bill payments,” NSP spokesperson Tiffany Chase said in the release.

The Customer Care Centre can be reached at 1-800-428-6230.

The NSP security team has been notified, and will be collecting information on any reports that Customer Care receives.

Anyone who suspects they might have been a victim of fraud is encouraged to report the incidents to police.
